4th June 1817: Letter from Wakefield

Wakefield 4 June 1817

Right Honorable Sir/

I beg to inform you your letter only came to hand this Eveing in consiquence of Sunday intervening it did not arrive here untill monday at which time I not returned Back from Lancashire—I wrote from Manchester on Saturday last Every particular that had occurred for Lord Viscount Sidmouth—there I found the Gentleman so desirous for me to go to Bolton Liverpool and several other places in pursuit of the delegates from Leister and nottingham and their officers within a Short distance if they had been found they were so disapointed in all the places I had traced them to that they very soon retired much disented with the reception they generally met with in Lancashire for this first application was for many to defray their Expences they had not left liverpool on Sunday morning two hours before I arrived there it was suposed they had gone to Bolton but when I got there I found they had been there prior to going to Liverpool on my return to manchester, on Monday Eveg—the Boroughreve had learnt that they were gone Back to Leister—and he promise me the particulars Should be sent to London Immediately—which prevented me sending—tho the people of Lancashire are very disaffected they do not seem to like the Yorkshire and nottinghamshire people proceeding

I have been in communication with the principal majestrates in Each place Except this & Sheffield the proceedings of that place I find has being sent up the London where I find I had been particularly noticed

when I arrived at Leeds yesterday I found they were very active and had sent delegates to various parts to request a deputation from Each place on fryday next week is to take place about fifteen miles from this but here like the other places they are beginging to fall out and become very jealous of Each other which I think will frustrate all their designs I found them generally so wherever I have been yet but in this neighbrood there are much the more formidable and determined than any I have been among—Fryday meeting is suposed to determine it—Sir John Byng whom I have but just left has received very good Evidence which very corroborate with what I have Observed to him and is very desirous that I Should attend them on fryday—at the same time there is to be a meeting of the majestrate of the neighbrood and hopes I would meet him at Leeds in the Eveing with the result and he considers my service so Essential I hope by so doing I Shall not incur the displeasure of his Lordship & yourself in not returning according to your request at so very particular a time as this—the active majestrate are very select and so persevering that no doubt is entertained of a most favourable result—Sir John Byng particular wishes me to be among them as often as possible and tomorrow I am desired to go to Huddersfield and its neighbrood—I hope to be able to send the particulars tomorrow the mail is just to get at present—but hope to hear from you again by return of post to Leeds if you please

I remain Honoured Sir
your very Obedient
and faithfull servant
WJ Richards
